spending for education caused waves with both sides. that issue will again find its way front and center, but first, lawmakers need to settle the state's budget. the budget is an excess of 7 billion dollars... the latest estimations indicate that's nearly 282 million more than the state brought in for the last fiscal year. even so, both republicans and democrats agree spending will be tight. the new fiscal year begins july first. the countdown to caucus holds another opportunity for white house hopefuls to face off... the 3 democrats will address minority issues in the "iowa brown and black presidential forum." the forum begins at 7 tonight in drake university's sheslow auditorium. but local minorities have already done their part to get ready for it... i hope the candidate feel and see where we are coming from... they dont

both activists and state leaders say they agree on the biggest priorities for iowa's minorities... that's criminal justice reform, economic equality, and immigration reform. and they say they're thankful the party is trying to address the issues... something bernie sanders got a jump start on yesterday... how about investing in jobs and education rather than in jail an incarceration. cheers sanders broke down the unemployment rates of minority high school graduates. he says it's 51 percent for black graduates and 36 percent for latino graduates. a new poll shows the democratic frontrunners are now neck and neck in iowa... the "n-b-c news - wall street journal - marist" poll puts hillary clinton just 3 points ahead of bernie sanders. with the margin of error, that's a virtual tie. martin o'malley

double digits. on the republican side, ted cruz and donald trump are fighting for the majority. cruz is only 4 points ahead of trump, also within the margin of error. marco rubio is in a far away third place. analysts say prices at the gas pump aren't done dropping... the national average for a gallon of regular, unleaded gas in one dollar and 96 cents. and tumbling oil prices, combined with strong refinery capacity, could push it to a dollar in some areas. that hasn't happened since 19-99. according to "gas buddy dot com," the metro is headed in the right direction. des moines average price per gallon is a buck 89. the lowest you'll find here is 1-69. authorities are investigating a man... it happened along summit street, night. the iowa state patrol says 48 year old john eller was driving westbound when he rear ended a vehicle. burst into

the people in the other vehicle were not hurt. west des moines firefighters are trying to figure out what caused a home to catch fire... crews found this home on bradford drive fully engulfed in flames early yesterday morning. no one was home at the time, but a firefighter was hurt when part of a wall collapsed on him. he has since been treated and released from the hospital. luckily, the fire didn't spread to neighboring homes, but owners say it was a scary situation... there was so much smoke, and that was all blowing to the southeast, and we couldn't really see what was all going on. it really looked like our own house was on fire. officials say the investigation could take weeks, because the home was completely destroyed. it's safe to say that the past couple days have been cold. it's not all bad news though as the frigid temps helped freeze many of the local

welcome back to "today in iowa." it's time to wrap up a weekend of big winners and big spenders. that's right, they'll have everyone talking for quite some time. but we start on a sad note, david bowie has died following a battle with cancer. the news was posted on the singer's website and social media earlier this morning. his agent issued a short statement, saying he "died peacefully surrounded by family and friends." bowie just released his 25th album "blackstar" on friday, his birthday. he was 69 years old.

no one cares as much as you do. host ricky gervais may have tried to dampen excitement at the golden globes... but it didn't work with the winners headed home with some hardware, like kate winslet. she won her fourth career globe, for best supporting actress in the film "steve jobs." a standing ovation greeted best supporting actor sylvester stallone... his first globe was for reprising his role as "rocky balboa" in "creed." and top films included "inside out," "the martian," and "the revenant." the "revenant" was no match for the force, which is still very strong in the box office. could take weeks, because the home was completely destroyed. the investigation into an overnight house fire in tipton is just beginning... this home along plum street caught fire a little after midnight. crews say flames were shooting from the roof when they arrived at the scene. they were able to keep the fire contained to one room... but there is widespread smoke and water damage. no one was hurt. more iowans are bundling up and braving the cold for some fun... that means it's prime time for ice fishing on local lakes and ponds. channel 13's josh nguyen is out exploring the sport this morning... and josh, there are a few things
